Japanese officials say Typhoon Talas has slammed into western Japan, bringing heavy rains and fierce winds.

Authorities say at least one person has died and five others are missing from the effects of the storm. Officials say more than a dozen people have been injured.

Talas made landfall Saturday on the island of Shikoku and is slowly moving north.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a warning that the heavy rains and strong winds could lead to flooding and landslides.

Weather forecasters expect Talas to finish passing through Japan Sunday and continue heading north into the Sea of Japan.
