The Mexican government says federal police have rescued two cameramen who were among four journalists kidnapped in northern Mexico this past week.
A statement issued Saturday said Javier Canales Fernandez and Alejandro Hernandez Pacheco, who work for the Multimedios and Televisa stations respectively, were rescued during an early morning raid in the state of Durango.
The two were abducted after reporting on a protest against a prison director accused of allowing inmates out of jail to commit killings for drug gangs.
A third journalist who was covering the protest, Hector Gordoa of Televisa, was freed Thursday. The fate of the fourth person, a newspaper reporter, was not known.
The kidnappers had demanded that the reporters' news organization broadcast three videos alleging links between the Zeta drug gang and police officials.
The Committee to Protect Journalists says Mexico is one of the world's most dangerous countries for the press. It says more than 30 journalists have disappeared or been killed since 2006.
