Gunmen attacked an air force base early Saturday in India's Punjab state, near the border with Pakistan, police said.
At least two of the attackers were killed at the Pathankot air force base during the shootout with soldiers, an Indian Defense Ministry spokesman said.
He said gunfire was continuing. Few other details were immediately available.
Indian officials said they were still trying to identify the attackers.
Pathankot is on the highway that connects India's insurgency-wracked Jammu and Kashmir state with the rest of the country.
The attack came just a week after India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an unannounced visit to Pakistan to meet Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
