Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is in Iran for a series of high-level meetings, despite bilateral tensions stemming from conflicts in Syria and Yemen.
Erdogan, accompanied by a high-level Turkish delegation, held talks Tuesday with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani before meeting with Iran's Supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
According to an Iranian media outlet (IRINN), Rouhani said both he and Erdogan agreed there should be an immediate cease-fire in Yemen. He said Iran, Turkey and other regional states should help facilitate a situation that will stabilize Yemen and lead to an inclusive government.
Some Iranian lawmakers had called for the visit to be canceled after Erdogan publicly backed the Saudi-led air campaign in Yemen against Iran-supported Houthi Shi'ite rebels, who have taken over parts of the country.
Turkey is also a key supporter of rebels fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Iran is Syria's main regional supporter.
Iran and Turkey have strong economic ties, with Iran being a major gas supplier to energy-strapped Turkey.
