Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer reminds that it is President Trump that has shut down the government, and that is "not the democratic way."
Schumer says Democrats and the president want border security, but they differ in how to get it done.
Schumer urges that government be reopened, and that border security be discussed separately.
In the 11-month period through August 2018, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials encountered 16,831 people convicted of crimes in the United States or abroad, but 63 percent of them showed up at ports of entry. That covers airports and maritime routes, not just land crossings.
