Trump Makes Case for Southern Border Wall, Democrats Respond

update

President Donald Trump addressed the nation Tuesday to make the case that his wall along the U.S.-Mexico border must be funded. It was his first prime-time address from the Oval Office. After Trump's address, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer provided the Democratic response.

Schumer said that previous presidents have used the Oval Office to address the nation over noble causes, but claims Trump is using the backdrop of the Oval Office it to manufacture a crisis.

In the 11-month period through August 2018, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials encountered 16,831 people convicted of crimes in the United States or abroad, but 63 percent of them showed up at ports of entry. That covers airports and maritime routes, not just land crossings.

Schumer urges that government be reopened, and that border security be discussed separately.

Schumer says Democrats and the president want border security, but they differ in how to get it done.
