Tropical Storm Hermine barreled into the U.S. state of Texas Tuesday, after dumping heavy rains on Mexico.
Related report by G. Flakus:
Forecasters with the U.S. National Hurricane Center say the tropical storm had sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour, but that it began to weaken as it moved farther inland. They expect the storm to become a tropical depression later Tuesday.
Hermine churned ashore with torrential rains along the Gulf of Mexico coast late Monday.
Forecasters say the storm could bring up to 20 centimeters of rain across parts of Texas, before moving north and dumping rain across Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri.
Hours before Hermine made landfall, authorities expressed concerns about the impact the storm could have on residents in low-lying areas or in areas near hillsides that could collapse if soaked by heavy rain. Shelters have been established for people displaced by flooding.
