One new title and a new champion: life is good on the hit list this week!
Let’s open in fifth place, where Iggy Azalea strikes again. This time, Rita Ora is along for the ride and ready to break into the United States market.
Iggy jumps a slot to fifth place with “Black Widow,” featuring Rita, who's been a rising star in the United Kingdom for the past two years. But she got off to a slow start in the U.S. Her debut album was never released on this side of the Atlantic. Instead of adding additional songs, Rita’s record company decided to introduce her to the stateside audience with her next album…which we should get in January. You’ll also be able to see Rita in the upcoming movie Fifty Shades of Grey - which opens in February.
Holding in fourth place is fellow British star Jessie J with “Bang Bang,” featuring Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj. Jessie and Nicki also have albums on the way. Ariana just topped the Billboard pop album chart with “My Everything,” and her partners aren’t far behind. Jessie drops her third album Sweet Talker on October 14; it’s her second stateside release. Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj finally revealed the release date of “her” third album, The Pinkprint, we get it on November 24.
Nicki’s set the stage nicely with her “Anaconda” single, which treads water at number three. Nicki says her old school just gave her the cold shoulder. New York’s LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, turned down her offer to speak to the students. A student told a New York radio station that the refusal arose from Minaj’s wish to bring a camera crew.
The cameras are trained on Taylor Swift, currently prepping us for the October 27 release of her 1989 album. On the Hot 100, her former champ “Shake It Off” slips to second place. Swift is treating a group of college students to a free show. A group of college fraternity brothers in Kentucky shot a video of themselves performing this song and she loved it so much that she’s treating all of them - and their dates - to one of her performances next year.
Hitting number one with your first single: every performer dreams of it, yet few achieve it. Meghan Trainor hits the bull's-eye this week, as “All About That Bass” reaches that all-important final step.
