The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Tomas is about 640 kilometers south-southeast of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, with maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour.
The storm was downgraded from a hurricane late Sunday, but forecasters expect it to gain strength again on Wednesday.
Current projections put the storm on a path to Haiti, where hundreds of thousands of people are living in tent camps following an earthquake in January. United Nations agencies and other aid groups have ordered food, shelter and emergency supplies to be stockpiled in camps across Haiti and coastal communities threatened by the storm.
The country is also struggling to contain a cholera outbreak that has already killed more than 300 people.
