A shark attacked a 17-year-old boy Saturday on North Carolina's Outer Banks, the second such attack there in as many days and the seventh attack off the coasts of the Carolinas in the past two weeks, the National Park Service said.
The service said on its Facebook page that rescue personnel and park rangers responded to the boy, who received what they described as injuries to his right calf, buttocks and both hands. Officials said the boy was swimming with others when he was bitten, but no one else was hurt.
The service said the unidentified teenager was treated at the scene before being airlifted to a Norfolk, Virginia, hospital.
On Friday, a North Carolina man was bitten on his back and leg in Avon while playing in the surf with his children. Another man was attacked near Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. He was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Associated Press reported that in the past two weeks, at least four other people have been bitten by sharks off the North Carolina coast. It said two of the attacks occurred within 90 minutes of each other at Oak Island, and in each case, the victim lost a limb.
