Israel has attacked targets in Syria for the second time in three days.
Loud explosions rocked Damascus as Israeli warplanes struck targets deep inside Syria. The Syrian news agency says Israeli missiles blasted a military research center near the capital.
Foreign intelligence sources say Israel hit sophisticated Iranian-made missiles believed to be headed to the Islamic militant group Hezbollah in neighboring Lebanon. These are said to be extremely accurate guided missiles, unlike anything Hezbollah has in its arsenal.
Friday, according to intelligence sources, Israel warplanes struck long-range missiles also allegedly destined for Hezbollah.
There was no official comment from Israel on Sunday’s pre-dawn attack. But Cabinet minister Uzi Landau dropped a strong hint.
He said Israel's policy is clear: It will not allow the transfer of sophisticated Syrian weapons to terrorist groups.
Syria’s Deputy Information Minister Hilf al-Miftah accused Israel of raising regional tensions.
Speaking on the U.S.-funded Arabic station Radio Sawa, he warned his country’s civil war could spread beyond the borders of Syria.
Until now, Israel has mostly stayed out of the fighting in Syria, but the air strikes have raised fears the situation could escalate into a broader regional conflict.
