A suicide bomber struck the diplomatic enclave in the Afghan capital Kabul, killing at least eight people and wounding many more, health ministry officials reported.

Islamic State claimed responsibility.

The bomb struck a heavily fortified area near the U.S. embassy at a time when security in the vicinity was heightened following a spate of attacks in recent weeks.

Earlier in October, a suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden car near the Afghan military academy in the capital city, killing 15 cadets and wounding several others. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the bombing.

A suicide bomber around the same time stormed a crowded Shi'ite Muslim mosque in Kabul, killing approximately 50 worshipers. IS said it plotted the attack.

Amnesty International demanded justice for the victims of Tuesday's attack, as well as all those affected by the recent increased violence in Afghanistan.

"Today’s bombing is the latest tragedy to befall people in Afghanistan in what has been a blood-soaked month," said Horia Mosadiq, Amnesty International’s Afghanistan Researcher. "The deliberate targeting of civilians is a war crime. The victims of this horrific wave of violence must not be reduced to objects of pity. They deserve justice."
