Officials say a suicide bomber has killed the police chief of Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province in an attack on the region's police headquarters.

A provincial spokesman says the bomber was dressed as a police officer and detonated his explosives near Khan Mohammad Mujahid, killing the police chief and wounding two other police officers in Kandahar city.

Mujahid had survived two earlier attempts on his life. Kandahar is the heartland of the Taliban insurgency.

Insurgents have targeted dozens of police and government officials in recent months.

A suicide bomber killed the provincial police chief of northern Kunduz province last month, in an attack claimed by the Taliban.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
