A Sudanese lawmaker says recent violence in the country's Darfur region has left more than 500 people dead.
That toll is far higher than previous estimates of the casualties from violence between rival Arab tribes which began in January.
Adam Sheikha, a lawmaker from the troubled region, says another 865 people have been wounded in the fighting between the Beni Hussein and Rizeigat tribes in the gold mining area of Jebel Amir in North Darfur.
The Reuters news agency cites him as saying some of those involved in the fighting are using government-issued weapons.
In the last decade, Sudan's government provided arms to Arab tribes in Darfur to help stop an insurgency by mainly non-Arab rebels.
