Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir says his government will continue to allow South Sudan to export oil through its pipelines.
Sudan had threatened to stop oil shipments from landlocked South Sudan by Friday, unless the South cuts ties with rebels operating near and across the two countries' disputed and unmarked border.
However, during a meeting Tuesday with South Sudan President Salva Kiir, Mr. Bashir pledged his commitment to implementing agreements signed by the two countries, including those that call for the transport of South Sudan's oil through Sudan's facilities and ports.
The two presidents said they are committed to maintaining good relations and opening a new chapter in their bilateral ties. President Kiir denied that his government supported any rebels operating along the disputed border region.
Mr. Kiir flew to Khartoum Tuesday for the one-day talks with Mr. Bashir aimed at averting the shutdown.
The trip was only his second to the country since South Sudan's secession from Sudan in 2011.
Relations between the former civil war foes have been strained, occasionally flaring up into hostilities. Last year, the countries almost went to war over which side controls the oil-producing Abyei region.
