Opposition officials in Sudan say a top Islamist opposition leader has been arrested, a month after the country's first multiparty elections in 24 years.
The opposition officials say a group of security officers arrived at the home of Hassan al-Turabi late Saturday and took him away.
He is the head of the opposition Popular Congress Party.
Authorities also raided the printing house of the party's daily newspaper Rai al-Shaab and confiscated all its copies.
Turabi had once been a close ally of President Omar al-Bashir but is now one of his fiercest critics and recently denounced last month's national elections as fraudulent.
Turabi has been in and out of jail since he formed his party.
He was arrested last year after saying President Bashir should surrender to the International Criminal Court. The court issued an arrest warrant for Mr. Bashir last year for war crimes in Darfur, charges the president denies.
President Bashir won the April elections with 68 percent of the vote. Most opposition parties either fully or partially boycotted the elections, saying ahead of time that the president's National Congress Party was planning to rig the outcome.
