If you’ve got a spare $200,000 and want to be among the first tourists to fly to space, you better get your ticket now.
Space.com reports ticket prices for Virgin Galactic’s suborbital SpaceShipTwo are set to jump 25 percent in the next week or so.
"In about a week’s time, we’re going to put the price up to $250,000 until the first 1,000 people have traveled, so that it matches up with inflation since we started," Virgin Galactic founder Sir Richard Branson told SPACE.com.
On Monday, Virgin successfully tested SpaceShipTwo’s rocket engines in the skies over California’s Mojave Desert, travelling over the speed of sound in the process.
SpaceShipTwo, which can carry six, is modeled after the three-passenger prototype, SpaceshipOne. In 2004 that ship won the $10 million Ansari X Prize for the first privately funded human space flights.
According to Reuters, Virgin Galactic and partner Aabar Investments PJC of Abu Dhabi have invested in the neighborhood of $500 million developing SpaceShipTwo, with another $100 million needed before commercial flights can start.
