The Advanced High Performance Reconnaissance Light Aircraft (AHRLAC) plane is officially unveiled by South African defense and aerospace giant Paramount Group at a ceremony in Pretoria, South Africa, September 27, 2011.

A South African company has unveiled what it calls the first military plane designed and made in Africa.

The chairman of South African defense and aerospace giant Paramount Group showed the plane to reporters on Tuesday.

Ivor Ichikowitz said the Advanced High Performance Reconnaissance Light Aircraft (AHRLAC) is ideal for surveillance and patrol applications. He said it also is armed to defend itself, enabling the plane to operate in hostile airspace.

Paramount Group said the plane could add up to a half a billion dollars to South Africa's industrial output.

The aerospace company produced the plane along with technical partner Aerosud, a South African aeronautical engineering company.
