Bangladeshi police officials stand guard on a street during a general strike in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Oct. 27, 2013.
Officials in Bangladesh say clashes between backers of the ruling government and supporters of the opposition have left at least three people dead and scores of others wounded.

At least one of the deaths was caused by security forces opening fire against attacking protesters.

The violence in various parts of the country Sunday took place on the first day of a three-day nationwide strike called by the opposition, led by former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

The strike is aimed at forcing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to step down, making way for elections under a caretaker government.

A new election is set for early next year.
