Egyptian aviation officials said Wednesday a French ship picked up signals likely emitted from the black boxes of an EgyptAir plane that crashed in the Mediterranean last month.

The Civil Aviation Ministry said the French navy surveillance vessel Laplace picked up the signals from the seabed of the search area.

Authorities say another vessel affiliated with the Deep Ocean search firm is heading to the area carrying with it a robot capable of diving up to 3,000 meters to retrieve the flight data recorders.

The black boxes have enough battery life to transmit signals up to four weeks after the crash.

The EgyptAir Airbus A320 was travelling from Paris to Cairo when it suddenly crashed killing all 66 people on board.

Investigators have said smoke was detected in the cabin minutes before the crash, but that there was no indication as to what caused it.
