At least one person was killed and 11 others injured in a shooting incident involving a group of tourists in Russia's volatile southern republic of Dagestan.
The shooting late Tuesday took place at a historic fortress where some local tourists were standing on a viewing platform.
News reports said the tourists were injured when a barrage of bullets was fired from the woods. Twelve were injured in the attack and one later died of his wounds. Reports say that the victim was one of two border guards among the group of visitors.
Violence is familiar in Dagestan, where Muslim separatists have been fighting the Russian government for years. But attacks on visitors to the region are rare.
