About 800 migrants arrived in Italy Saturday aboard a Norwegian ship that had rescued them off the Libyan coast Thursday.
The Italian Coast Guard said that 48 children and 94 women were in the group, believed to be mostly from Syria and Sub-Saharan countries.
They were transported to the port of Reggio Calabria and after the initial health checks, the migrants would be sent to reception centers across Italy.
Meanwhile, nine Syrian migrants were killed and 31 wounded in a roadside accident in Western Turkey on their way to a seaside town, with Greek Islands as their final destination.
European Union
Frontex, the European Union border management agency, said Friday that 49,550 migrants arrived in the EU through Greece in July, surpassing in a single month the total number of migrants for 2014.
The EU called on member countries Friday to fulfill their commitments to support the agency.
EU leaders pledged earlier this year to triple the Frontex budget and provide it with additional assets as thousands of people seek to escape poverty and armed conflicts in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
The International Organization for Migration has announced that more than 192,000 migrants have arrived in Europe by sea this year.
More than 2,000 migrants died attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea.
