At least seven people were killed in Somalia's capital in a shootout between soldiers at a displaced persons camp.
Witnesses said the shooting occurred Monday as people at the camp lined up to obtain food cards. Camp resident Habiba Abdirahman told VOA Somali that a soldier tried to move people into the line, setting off a dispute that escalated into gunfire.
A worker at Mogadishu's Media Hospital said the dead included a nine-month-old child and an 85-year-old man. At least 10 people were injured in the shooting.
Recurrent drought and chronic violence have left millions of Somalis dependent on food aid in recent years.
