Serbia Beats France For First-Ever Davis Cup Crown

Serbia has won the Davis Cup tennis competition for the first time! Novak Djokovic's dream of bringing men's tennis's premier international team competition to his still young nation has become reality, although Serbia had to go down to the wire for the second successive round.

In September's semi-final, they began the final day 1-2 down, but won both final-day singles. They have done the same now, Djokovic putting in a superb display to beat Gael Monfils for the loss of just eight games, and channeling his nervous energy superbly except for one flash of anger when he utterly trashed a racket in frustration.

If Djokovic is Serbia's hero for the year, Victor Troicki is the hero of the hour, as he played a superb match against the leaden Michael Llodra to win the Davis Cup for Serbia 6-2 6-2 6-3. "I still don't believe it. I'm seriously shocked. I will get this feeling of winning the Davis Cup in maybe four or five days. To play in front of the home crowd, full arena, to win such a match in the finals fifth rubber...there is no words to describe it," he said.

Troicki has not had a great Davis Cup year, but try convincing him that it matters when he is still exuberant after winning the most important match in his country's tennis history.
