South Korea says it plans to push ahead next month with a U.N. Security Council Presidential statement on preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
An official with the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs told VOA's Korean Service Monday that the purpose of the statement is to emphasize the strict implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1540. It prohibits support to non-state actors seeking weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery.
Seoul assumes the Security Council Presidency in May.
The South’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Oh Joon, said in an interview with VOA last week that preventing further provocations by North Korea will be his top priority during the UNSC presidency.
He emphasized that an important task for the Council will be to deter additional nuclear or missile tests by North Korea, and in the event they do occur; to respond swiftly.
Pyongyang in late March declared it "would not rule out a new form of nuclear test” if the United States and South Korea did not cancel planned military exercises.
