Russia has launched a new investigation against the leader of Russia's opposition who has said he wants to become the country's next president and jail current President Vladimir Putin and his associates.
Investigators say they suspect Alexei Navalny and his brother, Oleg, defrauded a company out of $119,000.
Navalny reacted to the new charges on his Twitter account Thursday. He tweeted, "Woke up on the train. Found out that they launched another probe. That means our trip has been successful."
The opposition leader was apparently on his way back to Moscow from the northern city of Kirov where he went on trial Wednesday on theft charges for allegedly stealing assets worth about $500,000 from a state timber company while he was advising a local governor in 2009.
Navalny denies what he says are politically motivated charges. He says he has "no doubt" that he will be found guilty.
Navalny helped organize mass protests starting in 2011 against alleged electoral fraud and Putin's return to the presidency.
Russia's next presidential election is set to take place in 2018.
