The International Olympic Committee says it is ``absolutely confident'' Rio de Janeiro will be ready for the 2016 Games, despite the closure of the stadium that is to host the track and field events.
Rio authorities decided to close the Joao Havelange Stadium to repair structural problems with the roof. Mayor Eduardo Paes said, "If it takes a year, then it will be closed for a year."
IOC spokesman Mark Adams told The Associated Press there are more than three years to take care of the problem before the games.
The 47,000 seat stadium is home to the Botafogo football club, but is not among the stadiums to be used for the 2014 World Cup.
Rio de Janeiro hosts the World Cup in June and July 2014, and the Summer Games in August 2016.
