British comedian Ricky Gervais was the host of the 73rd annual Golden Globes Awards in Los Angeles. And, as expected, he started off the show Sunday night with insults for the star-studded audience, calling them "disgusting, pill-popping deviant scum." Gervais fans and celebrities in the audience understand that he is known for a very irreverent style of comedy.
The Revenant, a film about a frontiersman's quest for survival in the 1820s after being mauled by a bear, won the prize for the best dramatic film. The film's director/writer/producer Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu thanked the "Native Americans who helped make this film possible."
Leonardo DiCaprio won the best dramatic actor award for his role in The Revenant. "I never had an experience like this in my entire life," the actor said about the making of the film. He thanked Gonzalez Inarritu who also won a globe for directing the film.
Sylvester Stallone, who dusted off the Rocky film franchise once again to play a boxing trainer, won a best supporting actor award for his turn in the critically acclaimed movie Creed. "I want to thank my imaginary friend Rocky Balboa for being the best friend I ever had," Stallone said. Creed is the seventh installment of the boxing film franchise.
The Martian won for best comedic film, a category that director Ridley Scott found befuddling. Upon accepting the globe for the film about a presumed dead astronaut who survives a mission to Mars, Scott said "Comedy?"
Martian star Matt Damon took home the award for best comedic actor. He did not seem to mind the comedy category, saying he knew "how lucky I am to do this for a living."
Brie Larson won the best dramatic actress prize for Room, in which she portrays a mother in captivity with her young son. Larson beat out Cate Blanchett for Carol and Alicia Vikander in The Danish Girl.
Jennifer Lawrence won for best comedic actress for her turn in Joy, about a woman who becomes the founder and matriarch of a powerful family business dynasty.
Mr. Robot won the globe for best television drama series, while Mozart in the Jungle won best musical or comedy series.
Mozart star Gael Garcia Bernal won the best comedic actor award, beating out Jeffrey Tambor of Transparent and Patrick Stewart of Blunt Talk.
Mad Men's Jon Hamm won best TV dramatic actor prize. Best dramatic actress prize went to Taraji P. Henson for her role as Cookie on Empire. Henson handed out cookies to the audience on her way to the stage.
Denzel Washington was the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award given annually to an artist for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. Washington brought his wife and three of his four children on stage with him. He had trouble reading his speech and his wife told him he needed his glasses. He asked her to read the speech for him, but she did not have her glasses, either. Other recipients of the DeMille Award in the past include George Clooney, Woody Allen, Morgan Freeman, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Barbra Streisand.
