Russia and India have signed new agreements on nuclear power and military cooperation during a visit to New Delhi by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

After Putin held talks Thursday with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the two sides said Russia's state-owned Rosatom will build at least 10 nuclear reactors in India.

The governments also agreed to have Russia build advanced helicopters for India.

Putin was also due to meet with President Pranab Mukherjee and opposition leader Sonia Gandhi during the one-day stop.

Russia is facing stiff Western economic sanctions for its role in the Ukraine crisis, and analysts say the Putin mission is aimed at developing new energy markets to help offset the impact of those sanctions.
