Rescuers found five bodies in a Chinese coal mine Tuesday, a day after bringing out 115 miners alive. The miners had been trapped deep underground for more than a week.
Teams are still looking for 33 miners at the Wangjialing mine in Shanxi province, which filled with water on March 28, trapping 153 coal miners.
Some of the survivors say they ate tree bark and drank dirty water to stay alive. Others strapped themselves to the mine shaft walls to keep from drowning.
All survivors are said to be in stable condition.
Local officials called the rescue operation "a miracle." China's mining industry is among the deadliest in the world.
About 3,000 people have been working since March 28 to pump water out of the shaft so rescuers could reach the trapped miners. Authorities say the coal mine likely flooded after workers penetrated old or abandoned shafts that had accumulated water.
According to official figures, 2,631 coal miners died in 1,616 mine accidents in China in 2009 - down 18 percent from the previous year.
