News reports say videotapes found by the CIA in 2007 show a key suspect in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, Ramzi Binalshibh, being questioned in a secret overseas prison.
The reports say the videos do not show enhanced interrogation techniques being used, and are believed to be the only recordings of interrogations in the clandestine prison system.
The Associated Press quotes current and former U.S. officials as saying the tapes show Binalshibh in 2002 in a facility used by the CIA near Rabat, Morocco. He was moved to a number of secret sites and is now at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The reports say the tapes show the detainee sitting at a desk answering questions.
Binalshibh was captured in 2002 in Pakistan. The now-38-year-old allegedly was a key plotter in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks in the United States. He had been denied a visa to enter the United States before the attacks.
In the administration of previous President George W. Bush, the CIA had destroyed tapes of interrogations of terror detainees in which operatives used harsh interrogation techniques, including waterboarding or simulated drowning. The destruction of the tapes drew outrage from lawmakers and led to a Justice Department investigation.
