Prosecutors rested their case Friday in the Colorado theater shooting trial, saying James Holmes methodically executed 12 people inside a packed cinema.
Over the past eight weeks, prosecutors have worked to show that Holmes was sane when he opened fire in a suburban Denver theater at a midnight showing of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises" in July 2012.
Holmes' lawyers will now call their own psychiatrists and present other evidence to argue the defendant was in the grips of a psychotic episode at the time of the shootings.
Holmes' attorneys say he should be committed to a mental hospital. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
A psychiatrist who treated Holmes before the rampage testified at the trial Tuesday that Holmes had homicidal thoughts but gave no indication he was planning the attack.
Dr. Lynne Fenton described meeting with the defendant before he dropped out of a neuroscience graduate program at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus weeks before the shooting.
