A senior police chief and an unidentified woman were stabbed to death outside his home in France Monday night.
A three-year-old boy was rescued by police at the scene. The assailant was killed in clashes with police at the scene.
The 42-year-old police commander was killed outside his home in Magnanville, about 55 kilometers west of Paris, before the attacker moved inside to kill the officer's presumed partner.
"The toll is a heavy one," interior minister spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet told reporters at the scene. "This commander, this police officer was killed by the individual... [and] we discovered the body of a woman. The assailant, the criminal was killed. Thankfully, a little boy was saved. He was in the house. He's safe and sound."
Islamic State's news agency "Amaq" has claimed responsibility for the attack, but Islamic State has not officially annoucned that the assailant was one of their own.
French president Francois Hollande "strongly condemned this odious act," vowing that "all light will be shed on the circumstances of this terrible tragedy," in a meeting of top officials at the presidential palace early Tuesday.
