A plane carrying Republican vice presidential candidate Mike Pence skidded off the runway during heavy rain Thursday night as it landed at New York’s LaGuardia Airport.
No one was hurt, and Pence was seen in television pictures standing outside the plane shaking hands with firefighters who rushed to the scene.
The runway was wet and slick from rain and cold temperatures. Passengers described the landing as rough and said they smelled burning rubber, apparently after the pilot slammed on the brakes.
A CNN reporter on board said she and other passengers are fine but “rattled.”
The airliner had about 30 to 40 people on board and had been delayed leaving Fort Dodge, Iowa, because bad weather was expected en route to New York. The incident closed LaGuardia Airport until further notice.
