An Australian woman convicted of drug smuggling has walked out of an Indonesian prison on parole after serving more than nine years of her sentence.
Schapelle Corby said nothing Monday as she rushed past hoards of journalists outside Kerobokan prison on the resort island of Bali.
Indonesian Justice Minister Amir Syamsuddin told reporters Friday that Corby was among a group of prisoners whose parole applications had been finalized, because she had fulfilled the requirements as set out in the law.
Corby was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2005 for trying to smuggle four kilograms of marijuana into Bali. Drug trafficking is punishable by death in Indonesia.
The terms of her parole require Corby to stay on Bali until 2017. She plans to stay with a sister who has a home on the island.
