Palestinian President in Egypt to Discuss Peace Talks

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is in Egypt for talks on the stalled peace process with Israel.

Mr. Abbas met Saturday with Arab League chief Amr Moussa. Egypt's state-run MENA news agency says the two leaders discussed Israeli settlement activities and other obstacles to the resumption of direct talks. On Sunday, Mr. Abbas meets with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

The U.S.-mediated direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians broke down after a 10-month Israeli settlement freeze expired in September. Palestinians oppose construction on land they want as part of a future state.

On Friday, U.S. President Barack Obama's administration said it was ready to offer Israel written security guarantees, in an effort to help re-start talks.

The written offer would formalize an understandings reached last week between U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The plan includes providing Israel 20 F-35 stealth jets.
