Pakistani officials say they have made arrests in connection with the failed car bombing in New York City's Times Square.
The officials, who did not want to be identified, said at least one man had been detained in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi on Tuesday. The man was said to be a friend of Faisal Shahzad, the Pakistani-American accused in the bombing attempt.
Shahzad was arrested late Monday at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport as he was waiting to take off on a jetliner to Dubai.
The 30-year-old was born in Pakistan, and officials say he became a naturalized U.S. citizen last year.
Law enforcement officials say Shahzad had recently returned from a five-month trip to Pakistan.
Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik said Tuesday that Shahzad and his family came from the Pabbi region of northwest Pakistan.
Malik has pledged his government's full cooperation with the United States in the investigation.
U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley welcomed Pakistan's pledge and said the U.S. is working closely with the Pakistani government in the ongoing probe.
A former neighbor of Shahzad in the northeastern U.S. state of Connecticut told reporters he lived in the town of Shelton with his wife and two young children until last year.
The Pakistani branch of the Taliban has claimed responsibility for being behind the bombing attempt, but police in New York said Monday there was no evidence to support that claim.
