Pakistan hanged four people Wednesday in connection with a Taliban attack on an army-run school in Peshawar last year during which militants killed 134 children and 16 staff.

The military announced in August the four men had been convicted and sentenced to death along with two others after they confessed to helping the gunmen who carried out the attack.

Witnesses described the gunmen shooting students at an assembly in a packed auditorium, then going methodically going classroom to classroom killing everyone they saw. Pakistani troops killed all of the gunmen after an hours-long battle.

The Pakistani Taliban said it carried out the attack in retaliation for the army's push to go after the insurgents.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif responded by lifting the country's moratorium on capital punishment, which had been in place since 2008. Pakistan has since executed several hundred people.
