Pakistan's military says government forces have killed a top al-Qaida leader wanted in the United States for a 2009 plot to attack the New York subway system.

The military says Adnan Shukrijumah was killed in an early morning raid Saturday on his compound in Shinwarsak, South Waziristan, near the Afghan border. Two of his accomplices were also killed.

Military officials say five other militants were arrested in the raid.

Shukrijumah had recently fled the North Waziristan tribal area to South Waziristan to avoid a military operation against militant bases launched in June.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation has had the Saudi-born Shukrijumah on its "most wanted" terrorist list and was offering up to $5 million for his capture.

U.S. prosecutors allege that Shukrijumah planned to use weapons of mass destruction to blow up the New York subway system.
