U.S. President Barack Obama has praised his Yemeni counterpart, Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi, for his cooperation in fighting al-Qaida terrorists based in Yemen.
The U.S. president made his remarks at the White House, where he held talks Thursday with Mr. Hadi.
Mr. Obama said President Hadi has been behind military reforms that have pushed al-Qaida's Yemen branch, also known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, out of the terroritories it once controlled.
Yemen has been a major U.S. national security concern. The United States considers al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula one of the world's most dangerous terrorist groups and has used drones to target its militants in recent years
Mr. Obama also congratulated Mr. Hadi on the government reforms he has introduced during Yemen's reconciliation process that began last year. The Yemeni president said his country looks forward to building a new constitution, partnering with all members of society and putting forth a new future for Yemen.
In a statement, the White House said the two leaders agreed to cooperate closely to return Yemeni detainees held at the U.S. Naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
