U.S. President Barack Obama is calling on Americans to do their part in honoring the country's military veterans.
Ahead of the federal Veterans Day holiday Tuesday, Obama used his weekly address Saturday to pay tribute to the men and women who have served the country in uniform.
He said those who have risked their lives to protect the freedom of all Americans must get the care they need and the opportunities they deserve when they return from duty.
President Obama said "the end of war is just the beginning" of the country's obligations to those who served, as well as to their families who have "made great sacrifices for America."
He called for an increased effort in health care, rehabilitation for the disabled, employment and education for veterans.
In the Republican Party's address Saturday, Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner also paid tribute to the nation's veterans, saying "as we consider their sacrifices, let us vow to live up to the promises that we've made to them and their families."
