U.S. President Barack Obama pledged in his weekly address Saturday to work with members of both parties to meet the challenges facing the country.
Commenting on the shooting of Arizona Congresswoman Gabriel Giffords and other victims last week, Mr. Obama said the country must carry on to grow jobs faster, forge a stronger, more competitive economy, shore up the budget and bring down deficits.
He said both parties must work together, "because before we are Democrats or Republicans, we are Americans."
Mr. Obama said he believes that Washington can meet those challenges in a way worthy of the voters who sent him and members of Congress to Washington.
