North Korea says it detained an American tourist on April 10 for a "gross violation" of its laws.
The official KCNA news agency reported that 24-year-old Miller Matthew Todd tore up his visa while entering North Korea and said he was seeking "shelter" in the country. The news agency said officials are investigating the tourist's "rash behavior" while going through immigration.
Word of the reported incident came as U.S. President Barack Obama was visiting South Korea for talks with President Park Geun-hye.
The U.S. State Department says it is aware of the report and has been in touch with Sweden, which acts on behalf of cases involving Americans in North Korea.
