North Korea says it has arrested a South Korean spy who who was working to undermine the communist government in Pyongyang.

The Korean Central News Agency said Thursday authorities detained the man in the capital, Pyongyang, but did not say when this happened.

The report said the unidentified man has confessed to being a South Korean citizen who entered Pyongyang illegally from a third country.

The alleged spy was said to use religious activities to disguise his "anti-DPRK espionage and plot-breeding activities" during his six years in the unmentioned third country.

KCNA also said he was trying to "rally dishonest elements" in North Korea and use them to undermine the "social stability" of the country.

South Korea's National Intelligence Service rejected the charges on Thursday, calling the claims "preposterous."

It is relatively uncommon for South Korean citizens to be charged with espionage in North Korea. The South, however, has arrested thousands of North Korean spies since the two countries' 1950s conflict.
