New York City's mayor is expected to sign an order saying people visiting city facilities must be able to use restrooms or locker rooms consistent with their gender identity.
City officials told The Associated Press that Mayor Bill de Blasio would sign an executive order on Monday.
The order says people must have access to single-sex facilities consistent with their gender identity at city facilities, including offices, parks, pools and recreation centers. An individual does not need to show identification or proof of gender.
De Blasio, a Democrat, has said access to bathrooms is a fundamental right that must not be restricted.
City public schools already have separate rules allowing students to use restrooms according to their gender identity.
An estimated 25,000 transgender or gender nonconforming people live in New York City.
