NATO and Afghan forces have killed a former detainee at the U.S. facility in Guantanamo Bay Cuba who became a key al-Qaida affiliate after returning to Afghanistan.
A coalition statement says Sabar Lal was killed in an operation late Friday in Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan.
The statement describes Lal as an insurgent leader responsible for attacks and financing militant operations in Kunar province in Afghanistan. It says he was in contact with top al-Qaida members in Kunar and Pakistan.
Lal also had ties to the Taliban.
NATO says several suspected insurgents were taken into custody during the operation late Friday.
