Aung San Suu Kyi’s Nominee Moves Closer to Myanmar Presidency
- By Steve Herman
In Myanmar’s lower house of parliament Friday an unelected retired bureaucrat from the National League for Democracy, Htin Kyaw, trounced the country’s current vice president, Sai Mauk Kham of the Union Solidarity and Development Party, 274 to 29, in first-round balloting to move a step closer to the presidency. It is the latest exercise in democracy as Aung San Suu Kyi’s party prepares to take the reigns of government on March 30 after decades of military dominance. VOA’s Steve Herman reports from the capital, Naypyitaw.
