American tennis star Serena Williams has been upset in the finals of the French Open by Garbine Muguruza of Spain.
The victory is the first Grand Slam title won by Muguruza, who won Saturday's final on the clay court in Paris in straight sets, downing the top seed and defending champion, 7-5, 6-4.
The fourth-seeded Muguruza, who lost to Williams in last year's final, is the first Spanish woman to win the French title since 1998 when Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario was victorious.
The loss by Williams is her second straight in a Grand Slam final. That leaves her one title shy of matching Steffi Graf for the most wins in a major, 22.
The men's final Sunday features the top two players in the world facing off. Top-ranked Novak Djokovic of Serbia faces Andy Murray of Britain.
