The U.S. military says two missiles were launched from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen in the direction of a U.S. ship in the Persian Gulf.
Officials say the two missiles, launched over a 60-minute period, landed in the water Sunday, but did not make contact with the USS Mason.
"There were no injuries to our sailors and no damage to the ship. We assess the missiles were launched from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen," Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said.
It was not immediately clear whether the U.S. destroyer was the intended target of the two missiles.
"In the first instance USS Mason employed onboard defensive measures, although it is unclear whether this led to the missile striking the water or whether it would have struck the water anyway," a U.S. defense official said on condition of anonymity.
The official said the incident remains under investigation.
