People across the United States are buying tickets for a slim chance to win what is expected to be a $450 million lottery Powerball jackpot Wednesday.
The jackpot would be the sixth-largest in the history of the game.
If there is no winner Wednesday, another drawing will be held Saturday, when the jackpot is expected to be bigger.
The largest jackpot ever won in the United States was $656 million in a March 2012 Megamillions lottery that was shared by three ticketholders.
The odds of winning Wednesday's lottery are estimated to be one in 292.2 million. The chance of being hit by lightning over the course of a year is one in 960,000.
Jackpot winners have 60 days to claim their prize and can choose to take a cash payout or have the money paid out incrementally over a 29-year period.
Powerball is played in 44 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
